Personal Computer Identification Lab Introduction The ability to properly run software is a function of the type and configuration of a personal computer system. Major determining factors include CPU type and speed, memory type(s) and size, BIOS type and features, support ICs, peripheral interface cards, hard and floppy drive types/storage capabilities, as well as monitor, printer, and other peripheral device features. The purpose of this lab was to explore the inside of the computer and examine its components. Body 1. CPU type, speed, and manufacturer. 2. Research and record the major features of this CPU. a. How many memory locations can it address directly? b. How many data bits does it process internally? c. How many data bits does it move externally? d. Does it have an internal math coprocessor? e. What is the size of its L2 cache? f. How does it compare with more modern CPUs? 3. Locate and record the DRAM type. a. What is the organization of the module? b. What is the access speed? c. What is the total amount of DRAM installed? d. What is the maximum installable amount of DRAM? 4. Locate the BIOS ROM chip and record the manufacturer and date. 5. What type of battery backs up the CMOS Configuration RAM? a. Locate and record the Hard Disk Drive manufacturer. b. What type of interface does it support (EIDE, SCSI)? c. Where is the HDD controller? Number of drives supported? d. What is the total storage capacity of the drive? e. Locate and record the removable disk drive(s) in the system. f. Where is the FDD controller. Number of drives supported? g. What is the storage capacity of each drive? h. What form factor is the motherboard? i. Who is the manufacturer? j. Record the type and number of expansion slots (8 bit ISA, 16 bit ISA, EISA, MCA, VLB, PCI, AGP). 6. Locate the I/O ports. a. How many serial ports are supported? From where? b. How many parallel ports are supported? From where? c. Are there other functions integrated on the motherboard? d. Locate the video card. e. What type of video card is used? f. Who is the manufacturer? g. What is the memory type and the amount installed? h. Is the amount of memory expandable? i. How is the mouse attached to the system? j. The mouse type? 7. Are there any other adaptor cards installed in e system. 8. What is the wattage rating of the power supply? Is it UL listed?
